Embracing the Chaos: Why Holiday Family Sessions Are Perfect Just as They Are

The holidays are one of my favorite times of the year. Not just for the twinkling lights and cozy sweaters, but because it’s the perfect season for family photo sessions. Whether you’re updating your annual portraits or creating that picture-perfect image for your holiday cards, now is the ideal time to capture those memories.

But let’s be honest, if you have little ones, you know that picture-perfect often looks more like beautifully chaotic. And that’s completely okay.

For families with young children, especially those ages 1–4, attention spans are short — about 20 minutes, max. After that, the exploring begins, the giggles turn to squirms, and sometimes, the smiles melt into little tears. This is totally normal and something I encourage parents to embrace rather than stress about.

Because here’s the truth: those unplanned moments, the running away, the curious looks, even the mid-session meltdowns, are all part of your family’s story. They capture this fleeting stage of life in its realest form.

As a photographer, I absolutely love candid images. While I’ll always guide you through some posed shots for that classic holiday photo, I’ll also be quietly snapping the genuine moments in between, the laughter, the cuddles, the little hand reaching for yours. Those are the photos that often end up being everyone’s favorites.

So this holiday season, don’t worry if your session doesn’t go exactly as planned. The magic lies in the moments you didn’t plan for. The toddler years may be wild and unpredictable, but they’re also incredibly beautiful — and documenting them just as they are is one of the greatest gifts you can give your family.

How to Prepare for Your Holiday Session with Toddlers

A little preparation can go a long way in helping your session run smoothly, and making it fun for everyone! Here are a few simple tips I always share with families before their shoot:

Plan outfits accordingly.

Choose something comfortable and easy to move in, especially for little ones. Layers and textures photograph beautifully, but keep in mind that comfort always comes first.

Make sure the kids nap beforehand.

A well-rested child is a happy child. Try to schedule your session around nap time so they arrive fresh and in good spirits.

Bring toys and snacks.

A favorite stuffed animal, small toy, or snack can be a great distraction or quick reset during the session. Sometimes the best smiles come right after a goldfish cracker break!

If your child isn’t walking yet, bring a stroller or an extra set of hands.

I often include parent-only poses in every session, and having someone to help hold or comfort the little ones makes all the difference.

Let them take breaks.

At the end of the day, the kids truly run the session. I like to give them little breaks to explore and de-stress, while we focus on parents, siblings, or detail shots in between.

The goal is to keep things light and easy — the more relaxed your family feels, the more genuine your photos will be.
